    INDIA - WAGHORN COVER FROM CALCUTTA TO FRANCE WITH THE RARE OVAL "Care of/Mr. Waghorn/Suez" CACHET; 16 Jan. 1840 EL (in French) to Bordeaux "Via Bombay and Suez" with a most attractive very fine strike of the rare oval-framed "Care of/Mr. Waghorn/Suez" mark with ms Register no. "621" and “1/-" [1 rupee paid for the Waghorn fee], and initialled "G.D. [for] S.S." [Samuel Smith agency] nicely placed on the front, beside a very fine red boxed Calcutta "INDIA" and a very fine red boxed "PAQUEBOTS/DE LA/MEDITERRANEE". There is a "29" French arrival charge on the front and also a red boxed "STEAMER POSTAGE[9]/INLAND DO.[14]/TOTAL[1-7]" mark across the join on the reverse, beside a fair 10 Mar. "BORDEAUX" arrival cds. [Ex Oct. 2017 Gaertner auction; lot 7681; realised 3,200 euros + BP.] Plus a 1909 PPC of "SUEZ. QUAI WAGHORN" with Egypt 1m tied by Port Said cds, and a modern hardback reprint of Waghorn's 1846 2nd Ed. "OVERLAND GUIDE TO EGYPT". A most attractive Waghorn cover of true Exhibition quality.
