    MULREADY CARICATURES, ETC. - SPOONER'S MULREADY CARICATURE No.6 "MESSAGES" - USED LOCALLY WITHIN EDINBURGH; Fine c.1840 example of this rare comic Spooner envelope (with black wax seal depicting a helmeted figure with a spear - Mercury?) without postal markings (presumably locally privately carried) addressed to "Mifs Buchan, 4 Meadow Place" in Edinburgh (identified from the 1838 Pigot Edinburgh directory; photocopy included). Excellent example of this design depicting Britannia & the Lion smoking clay pipes surrounded by 6 comic couples discussing or describing the letters in their hands inc. "An unpaid Letter for me?" (to "Mrs. Screw"!), "A hinfernal Lawyer's Letter", "A Letter from my Sweetheart", etc. Cross Reference : SCOTLAND
