The Derek Filby Collection of Burma

The Derek Filby collection of Burma was auctioned at the Cavendish Gallery in London on December 13th with excellent results being achieved. Featuring fine material which has not been on the market in recent years, bidding was fierce and active in the room, on the telephones and on-line, resulting in 93% of the lots offered being sold.

The sale attracted collectors on-line with easyLiveAuction.com, from Japan, China and India in particular, and many specialist collectors bid in person or via our agents Nick Martin and Trevor Chinery. There was much interest from Europe too, with strong book bids via Philasearch and our own website.

Due to the intense battles, many items sold for much more than estimate, in particular an extraordinary Shwegyin "B/171" octagon cancel on fine India 1a red + 2a green on underpaid cover to U.S.A. Via G.B. (lot 35) which sold for £6000, and the only examples we have recorded of the 1937 "BURMA" issue high values very rare mint Interpanneau blocks of four.
